Water is a principle sign of life because it is indispensable for life. Our planet is a planet of water. It cleanses, refreshes and renews. We are surrounded by it from the moment of conception. Unchecked, it can be awesome in its power sweeping everything before it.
In Baptism, water is a sign of new life. It is a new birth. We are cleansed from sin, buried with Christ so as to rise with Him to new life.
