One of the most common and familiar forms of Lenten prayer practiced by Catholics is "The Way of the Cross" or "Stations of the Cross." In the early centuries of Christianity, people traveled to the Holy Land to visit the places where Christ suffered, died and rose from the dead. As Christianity spread to further regions of the world, it became more and more difficult to travel to the Holy Land; so representations of these holy places were erected in people's homes and their churches. By the 14th century, the religious order of Franciscans erected these "stations" in their monasteries, and the practice soon spread to individual parishes.

From that time until now, the "Stations" have been one of the most practiced devotions of Catholics. The "Stations" are a symbol of life's journey, marked by many obstacles and burdens - crosses that we must bear along the road to everlasting life.
