Part of the physical remains of a saint or an object closely associated with a saint; according to Catholic teaching, authentic relics are worthy of veneration by the faithful; the relics of martyrs and other saints are placed in the altar stone of a fixed altar; according to Church law, "it is absolutely forbidden to sell sacred relics" (Canon 1190, §1).
