Purgatory
According to Catholic teaching, the state or condition of those who have died in sanctifying grace (or the friendship of God) still in need of purification before they see God; this purification is altogether different from the punishment of the damned. The faithful are encouraged to pray for the souls in purgatory, especially on the feast of All Souls, November 2.
