This candle is unmistakable sign of Easter and is associated with the Baptismal ceremony and the Sacraments of Initiation which take place at the Easter Vigil. In the ancient Church, the Vigil was the only time baptism was celebrated. The language of the Exultet, or the blessing of the great Easter Candle, makes the definite connection between the candle and Christ, the true light. It is He who puts the darkness of sin and death to flight. The smaller candles, lit from the great paschal candle and held by each individual, represents the light of Christ coming to each Christian who strives to carry that light of Christ in his/her life.
