Monstrance

Celebrating 100 years

The Monstrance , also called the ostentorium, is an object often in the form of a cross, used to display the Blessed Sacrament for public adoration. The word itself comes from the Latin word monstrare, "to show." The monstrance is used on various occasions: adoration of the Blessed Sacrament during Adoration, Holy Hours, and for Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament when the people are blessed with the Holy Eucharist.

Devotion to and public adoration of the Blessed Sacrament developed in the history of the Church from a desire of the faithful to be more closely united with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and to express their adoration of Him. These devotions to the Blessed Sacrament grew in popularity particularly after the Protestant Reformation and the denial by some of the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist.
