May is the traditional Marian month in our Catholic Church. May represents another opportunity for people all over the world to ask anew "Who is Mary for me?" Mary is different things to many different people…a long ago and far away "lady wrapped in blue"…a statue smiling sweetly down from a shelf…a woman who questions yet believes…a woman who first brought Christ into the world and shows us how to do so daily by hearing the word of God and keeping it…a mother who bears the sorrows of her dearly beloved son, and while giving him up, opens her arms to embrace the whole world…
Mary is who she is because her Son is who he is. Being the mother of Jesus does not make her any less human nor any less a woman. In the gospels we find not a possessive or dependent Mary but a spirited, liberated Mary who responds to the truth which makes us all free.
Mary's whole life is a living, breathing model for our own journey of faith. All the joys and pains we grapple with, Mary knew too. Nothing in her life was safe or secure. At each moment she was called again to say "yes" to bear Christ into the world.
During May there will be some quiet reflective moments to focus on the life of the Mary who was given to us as Mother and gain insight into who she is. As women and men of faith, we have the same mission as she: to say "yes" to bearing Christ to the world. And, in searching to find her we may also find ourselves and a clearer sense of her and our mission.
In addition to our daily rosary each morning, we will pray the rosary on the four Sundays of May prior to the 8:00 a.m. Mass. Come early and join us in praying this most powerful prayer.
