After they have received their First Holy Communion, Catholics are bound by the obligation of reveiving Holy Communion at least once a year. This precept should be fulfilled during the Easter Season. Catholics are also bound to confess serious (mortal) sins at least once a year, but this is not limited to the Easter Season.
A popular term for the obligation thus described in the Code of Canon Law: Canon 920 §1: "All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year." §2: "This precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season unless it is fulfilled for a just cause at some other time during the year." In the United States the Easter season, for purposes of fulfilling this precept, has traditionally been understood to extend from the First Sunday of Lent until Trinity Sunday.
