Earlier today I read a e-mail post, I forget exactly what the topic was, but it mentioned deacons elected Pope. I thought you might find it interesting that between the years 432 and 684, thirty seven men were elected pope. Of the thirty seven, 3 were priests/bishops at the time of the election. the other THIRTY FOUR men were deacons at the time of election.
Today (Sept 3), we celebrate the feast day of Pope St. Gregory the Great, a deacon at the time of his election as pope. His successor, the Archdeacon Savinian, was also a deacon when elected pope.
When a bishop died, the deacon or archdeacon was usually the selected successor as he was the most well known in the (arch)diocese.
The confusion that sometimes comes about because the commonly accepted procedure was that the deacon who was the pope-elect would be ordained a priest, then consecrated a bishop, then become pope. For Pope St. Gregory the Great, it is said that the deacon was elected pope, ordained a priest, consecrated bishop, became pope in the span of three hours.
Just thought this might be interesting...
